POLITICS:

Well, I wrote (January 24 preamble) that, despite the polls giving Trump a huge lead in Iowa, Ted Cruz could beat him there because 1) Cruz is a born politician of a very successful type (see Benjamin Disraeli, his solar twin) and 2) he will run a good ground game – which I suspected was Donald’s Achilles Heel. So it was. I think this heel (it’s a Gemini flaw, a distaste for fundamentals) is a systemic problem that will surface more than once on Trump’s already legendary campaign. Even if he falls by the wayside or loses the final lap, Trump has revealed the mass and hunger, the anger and frustration of a major portion of the American population. This frustration, and its brother emotions, created a strong loyalty to the first “respectable” and charismatic leader this portion of society has ever found. They pour to him, these people who have had to stand in government lines, who are unemployed or working poor, or are poor farmers, or office workers, middle managers who can own their home and their car and a towable boat – and there the fence stands. On one side is the comfortable suburban home, the car and the little towable boat in the asphalt driveway. On the other side, and unreachable no matter how hard he tries (without selling his home or family) is a floating yacht, one that needs a dock, and pays dock fees. He might, Mr. 90 %, manage to buy the larger yacht, but he couldn’t afford to keep it.

(Unfortunately, such depictions as mine of the chasm between the wealthy and the rest of American society, tend to believe or give the impression that there are only two “camps” – the great masses, and the billionaire class. There are many camps – the poor, the black, the working class for three – but there are also many “comfortable” Americans, and affluent professionals, and the politely wealthy, successful entrepreneurs, etc. And there must be thousands of mid-level industrialists and tech innovators who just haven’t cracked the billion mark, and might never, yet could have 50 million or 900 million. The panic comes from the developing — 20 years old by now? — bulge in that zone below the affluent professionals. [I don’t say “below “comfortable Americans” because this strata is the one who first meets — and confirms — along with African Americans — the fence — those above “comfortable” have hope. In addition, the “comfortable” have been under siege since the first “rust belt” declines in the 1970/80’s.] Despite the existence of a long slope in socio-economic power, that bulge persuades us to see society as two, as a duality, rich and poor, entitled and “rights-poor.”)

It’s not a physical fence that corrals the middle and lower classes, except in the subtleties of architecture and the lushness that separates the wealthy. Nor is it an ideological or legal fence or a fence at all, except that it stops these “ninety per cent” from reaching wealth. It is really a void, the black side of capitalism, the nightmare side of the American Dream – an immense precipice whose bottom cannot be seen, and its opposite bank appears smooth, ungraspable even should one find a way to propel himself across that measureless void.

Then, from the other side of that bridgeless chasm comes a shout of anger and disdain, of power and extreme views – extreme, at least, to media pundits and established politicians (who have practiced ignoring that chasm) – a shout that says, “I’m a Hero, and I’ve entered this fight to rid us of corruption and to stop the self-serving ways of the people on My Side of the Invisible Fence.” Then our Hero cleverly makes his followers forget the fence that keeps them out of wealth, by shouting strident promises to erect other, real fences, to keep out the Mexicans and Muslims and terrorists. We need to build more fences, fences around our country, to keep these rapists and murderers and madman terrorists out — out of Our Country. This way he turns the red, angry cheeks toward other fences than the one that really holds them back. The real, invisible fence, or chasm, is the collapse of populist capitalism.

 

Like I wrote here in the 1980’s, a third form of government will come, that is neither capitalism nor communism. We’re about a third or half way along that road.

 

So far, I’ve only made two forecasts on the American election: that Cruz might win Iowa due to Trump’s negligence in the “ground game,” and (about a year ago) that Hillary Clinton “should not run.” I’m not making any more election predictions yet. But here’s some impressions:

 Kasich – favorite father, would make best president.

Bush – nicest loser; timid, not cowardly; always trying to do and express the right thing; professor among sharks. Huge mistake to bring his mom, dad and brother into the campaign – it made him look even weaker – nicer and weaker, a mamma’s boy. Wealth made his brother a bit arrogant and “hard of hearing” as he walked by the moans of the poor and afflicted. Jeb, though, seems to be embarrassed and apologetic about his family’s wealth. Has grown belligerent, assertive very lately toward his opponents – is now showing his backbone, and it’s considerable. After Kasich, would make the best president of all current runners.

Marco Rubio – mistakes stridency for passion. Too Christian; I feel it is his flaw, in many subtle ways that will quietly unsettle the loyalty of his followers. Also, too speechifying during debates. A schoolboy, reciting lines. (Christie just jumped on this, very successfully.) Cute, young and fresh, though. An idealist with high-school ideas. Like Trump, a Gemini – changeable, and not strong on his ground game.

Carson – like a boy caught in a lie. Deflated like a punctured tire after his most outrageous claims, which everyone knew in their gut were false. That deflation, and the curious lack of bounce from him afterwards, showed an integral weakness that a President must not have: a passive or shrinking reaction to crisis or challenge. Like a fable, memory of Carson fades, his work is done.

Christie — blessed with a warm, comforting charisma. Found an effective, emotive way to look squarely into the camera and speak directly to us, rather than to the moderators or other debaters. But he’s a one-note musician, using this technique again and again, debate after debate, without a change of expression. It ends up as suspect, believability-wise. Selfish, self-indulgent, and I suspect a bully

Rand Paul – admirable. Hard to picture as President (he’s not running now) because there is not a wide range of emotion behind his ideals – what emotions he does display are purely male: anger, frustration, triumph, etc. – he lacks an emotional fluidity and a feminine warmth.

Cruz – cold or cool hearted. (See description of him one or two columns ago.) Does have a sense of humor and a fine mind. Dictator material. Sagittarian – we don’t see it, but he likely has a fierce, hot temper.

Trump – more kind and compassionate than he seems. Very used to relating: uses bluster to eliminate the straw and fluff, then grows more inclusive and welcoming. (E.g., a chauvinist in public, empathic in private.) Needs more depth. More philosophical and balanced than he first appears. Like Christie, a bully, but in an off-handed way. (“Leave me alone and I won’t smack you.”)

Or:

Trump – poor Trump.

Hillary – besides everything else, there is something stale about Clinton. If you broke her open, a bunch of dry dust would pour out. She runs with a logo that looks like it was created by a 1980’s corporate artist. An H with an arrow through it – bad choice, cold, calculating, corporate – not human.  She has chosen to run on her record rather than on ideas/ideals, yet her record is filled with vulnerabilities – Benghazi, the women she abused while she was First Lady, her vote to invade Iraq, etc. I think she has always had one overriding objective: power. Yet, within this power, if she is granted it, I suspect she will rule with kindness and grace. But how can people vote for a campaign that’s somehow composed of – well, I suspect she is bored, or angry – the anger of those who feel they have been unfairly excluded – and is hiding it extremely well. But voters respond subconsciously, and they “sense” beneath all candidate’s surfaces. And now, both Clintons calling Bernie Sanders sexist? The Clinton who made a young intern perform fellatio on him, then employed his wife to cover his tracks and create a distraction by pursuing the women who had complained? This is not a sexist couple? People in glass houses…. (A  serious thing here: male sexual abusers, even of their own children, are often accompanied by weak or bad women, who at least ignore, at worst enable and facilitate their crimes. When I protested my grandfather’s sexual abuse of me as a boy, my grandmother called me a “sex maniac.” Bill and Hillary’s sins should not be taken lightly. They are both charming and false; but Bill was worse.)

But none of these are predictions!

The following was sent to me by a reader weeks ago, and dang it, I’ve forgotten the sender’s name to credit him. (Please email me.) But I am putting it here without comment. True or false, I’ll let it stand on its own:

In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, observed the following about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:

“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.

A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship.”

 

(It’s unclear whether the following list is from the same professor.):

 

“The average age of the world’s greatest civilisations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years.

During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence of events….

1. From bondage to spiritual faith;

2. From spiritual faith to great courage;

3. From courage to liberty;

6. From complacency to apathy;

The following is from another scholar, sent to me by the same source:

 

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the last Presidential election:

 

Number of States won by:         Obama: 19                    Romney: 29

Square miles of land won by:    Obama: 580,000           Romney: 2,427,000

Population of counties won by: Obama: 127 million      Romney: 143 million

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:

Obama: 13.2                  Romney: 2.1

 

Professor Olson adds: “In aggregate, the map of the territory Romney won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country.

Obama territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income tenements and living off various forms of government welfare…”

 

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the “complacency and apathy” phase of Professor Tyler’s definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation’s population already having reached the “governmental dependency phase”.

 ARIES   March 21-April 19

 

A celebratory atmosphere continues – but only to Thursday, when a period of quietude and rest begins. Even that restful period, though, will bring some gratifying social moments, as loving Venus spends this Tuesday to March 11 in your popularity sector, bringing light romance, entertainment, and friends who seek you out. If single, you might meet a potential mate in a group. Chase money, go shopping, sell items Sunday to 3 pm (PST) – after this, everybody sports a bit of a rough edge. However, in all this – intimacy, finances, investigation, commitment – be self-aware and stand on your best, highest motives, because temptation will abound, will wear disguises, and will be the sticky strand that can pull you into a spider’s web. Earlier, Sunday, be ambitious, especially before 3 pm (PST) when you could pluck a money plum (or buy a status symbol that can aid your career/prestige). Earlier, Sunday holds mysteries and secrets, a secret attraction to someone, and a possible falling out over this. The day also nudges you to invest – a good idea if you do it before 3 pm (PST). A broad outlook, wisdom, a mellow mood, and love flow over you Mon. morning to Wed. noon. You could fall in love, meet love, and/or agree to marry. You could also  travel, chase an intellectual goal, attend cultural venues. Best times: Mon. morn, Tues. night and Wed. morn. Worst: Mon. night, Tues. morn, when deception, poor health (queasy stomach?) or job difficulties could lead to “downer” conversations or skepticism. Be ambitious Wed. noon to suppertime Fri. You might be shifting your career parameters, taking on a new job or project. That’s fine, but remember: until May 2017 you’ll be more successful if you manage or delegate tasks, than if you do them yourself. “Hands on” can create a bit of a trap or wasted time.  SCORPIO   Oct. 23-Nov. 21

Your relative seclusion will end Thursday, bringing a new month of romance, beauty, the pleasure of the moment, charming kids, teaching, and chance-taking. But before you start all that, you have loose ends to tie up. Use the first of this week to prune your garden, prune your projects and relationships; to embrace and reassure your family; to landscape, build, ensure proper nutrition, and, in business, to build/strengthen foundations or expand territory. You’ll experience your family’s affection (and hi-jinks) into mid-March. Realize, now to March 5, and again all June/July, you might wear a fierce look and be quick to pounce on others. Tie up loose ends before Friday, Sage – get letters and emails answered, return calls, make contacts and perform the paperwork you know is essential. Communicate, ask questions, consider a new phone or office filing system, etc. (You probably won’t finish such things, as March shows “affectionate answers” to your February enquiries.) Thursday night will bring a month that “sequesters” you by making you tired, unenthusiastic. This is Nature’s way of nudging you to rest, to hibernate for a few weeks. If you can be/get there, home will be the best place for you in the weeks ahead. But you’ll remain very busy until Friday. Tackle chores Sunday, especially career-related, status, prestigious or business chores – until 3 pm, great ideas, prospects and solutions are available. Walk through open doors, don’t be shy. Some small friction might mar the later hours. Crucial relationships face you Monday dawn to Wed. noon (PST). These face problems (deception, your own skepticism) late Mon. to 9 am Tues. But before and after, all is fine – make a friend, jump on an opportunity, investigate relocation, and invite negotiations. Love is possible, too.  CAPRICORN   Dec. 22-Jan. 19

Continue to chase money and gather possessions until Thursday night, Cap. After this, you enter a month of easy but busy days, filled with errands, siblings, paperwork, details, calls and communications, travel and visits. Realize all this “easy busyness” can be a time-wasting trap, until May 2017. If you find yourself “surfing the superficial,” just pull back and think of more profound matters: love, the meaning of life, etc. This will somehow protect you or get you back on a productive path – not immediately, but within hours or a day. But until late Thurs., chase money, butter up the boss, welcome clients, and make astute purchases. A casual sensual affair might be “offered.” But its end will be boredom, so decide/act accordingly. Sunday’s romantic, creative; nature’s beauty soothes you, and pleasure can arise anywhere, from that bowl of soup steaming on the porch, to a glimpse of someone’s special side. You could fall in love, even get a travel or marriage proposal accepted this day, before 3 pm (PST). But exercise caution after three. Tackle chores and protect your daily health Monday dawn to Wed. noon – you’ll accomplish a lot, but don’t be led astray Monday night, Tues. morning. Relationships arise noon Wed. to suppertime Fri. Again, fine progress is yours, except Thurs. afternoon/eve. Think deeply Fri. night, Saturday: an urge toward physical intimacy, toward binding your body and soul to another, high intuition, financial maneuvers, open doors that, should you enter, lead to mysteries, perhaps to dangers, perhaps to triumphs – these await you. (Hint: all’s well, the open doors are benevolent – IF your own intentions, morals are “clean.” E.g., no extramarital shenanigans!)

 

 AQUARIUS   Jan. 20-Feb. 18

Your charisma, effectiveness, energy and clout remain high. Continue to start or further significant projects, to make contacts, see and be seen, and to impress others. You’re the leader, so lead! (Even if only by example.) Thursday night will start a month of chasing money, counting and protecting possessions, and casual sexual attractions. Listen, Aquarius, until May 2017, this entire sector (earnings, buy/sell, possessions, casual sex) is a bit of a trap – worse, diving in, and the time wasted, can prevent you from success elsewhere. You’ll fare much better, encounter more open doors, organic growth, and happiness/success (especially now to September 2016) if you aim for the longer, deeper side of these: deep, meaningful sex, monogamy, investment or debt reduction, profound thinking and relationships. Look under the hood – reject surface appearances. But that’s Thurs. night onward. Earlier, spend Sunday resting, soaking up domestic vibes, playing with family – you could find a great real estate investment, or discover a way to reduce your mortgage, before 3  pm.
